CDAC high school intern Maneeshika Madduri was a semifinalist in the 2008 Siemens Competition for Math, Science, and Technology with her project on hydrogen complexation studies in crown ethers. Congratulations!
Steven Jacobsen, CDAC Academic Partner from Northwestern (and former Barbara McClintock Postdoctoral Fellow at the Geophysical Laboratory) has been awarded a Packard Fellowship for Science and Engineering. Jacobsen is among 20 scientists selected nationally this year to receive this grant. The funding will support development of Jacobsen’s nano-pulsed GHz-ultrasonic method to study atomic-scale, physical properties of superhard materials targeted for future technological applications
The Carnegie Institution held its annual Summer Scholars Research Symposium on Wednesday, August 6th. The ten students participating in the program this year presented the results of their work for the entire Broad Branch Road campus community. The presentations covered a wide range of topics, including mineral physics, organic geochemistry, astrobiology, petrology, seismology and astronomy.

Russell Hemley has been elected Honoris Causa Professor for Energetics, Mechanics, Machinery, and Control Systems of the Russian Academy of Sciences (RAS). The academy is the leading scientific body in Russia. Founded in 1724, it is one of the oldest such organizations in the world. The degree is awarded to the most eminent foreign scientists.
CDAC supports graduate student research and training in the area of high pressure materials science, broadly defined. We accept proposals on a continuing basis from faculty interested in joining the CDAC team as academic partners. Student support consists of salary, tuition/fees and some travel to CDAC facilities for experiments. Please send a one-page statement of research interests and plans to Steve Gramsch, CDAC Coordinator.

Postdoctoral Research Associate in Neutron Scattering Neutron Scattering Science Division Spallation Neutron Source Oak Ridge National Laboratory Oak Ridge, Tennessee ORNL08-60-NSSD Project Description: The high pressure group at Oak Ridge National Laboratory is seeking a postdoctoral scientist to work within the single crystal diffraction group on the newly operating neutron diffraction instrument SNAP. SNAP is one of the newest instruments at the Spallation Neutron Source at Oak Ridge and has recently received first neutrons. This instrument currently has a variety of high pressure equipment including large-volume high-capacity presses, gas pressure cells and gem anvil cells that combined are capable of generating pressures from several kilobar to several tens of GPa. This high pressure research group currently conducts research on materials using a variety of techniques including neutron scattering, x-ray diffraction at synchrotron sources, and optical spectroscopy as well as collaborating with various theory groups. Primarily, this position involves carrying out research on materials properties and processes under extreme conditions of pressure and temperature using neutron scattering techniques. Qualifications: To be considered for this position, applicants need to have completed a Ph.D. degree in physics, chemistry, materials science, earth sciences or a related field. Although the research will be focused on high pressure phenomenon, previous high pressure technique experience is not a requirement for consideration. We encourage interested persons with crystal structure refinement experience either using neutron or X-ray data to apply. Particular attention will be given to candidates with data reduction and analysis software development experience. How to Apply: Qualified applicants may apply online at: https://www2.orau.gov/ORNL_POST/. All applicants will need to register before they can begin the online application. For complete instructions, on how to apply, please see the instructions at http://www.orau.gov/orise/edu/ornl/ornl-pdpm/application.htm. When applying for this position, please reference the position title and number. This appointment is offered through the ORNL Postgraduate Research Participation Program and is administered by the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education (ORISE). The program is open to all qualified U.S. and non-U.S. citizens without regard to race, color, age, religion, sex, national origin, physical or mental disability, or status as a Vietnam-era veteran or disabled veteran. |
